TMJ Dysfuction

Temporomandibular Joint

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) dysfunction can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds, difficulty chewing, headaches, and neck tension. The TMJ connects the jaw to the skull, and when this joint is misaligned or overworked due to stress, clenching, or poor posture, it can lead to discomfort and dysfunction.

Chiropractic care, osteopathy and massage therapy all offer effective, non-invasive treatments to help relieve TMJ pain by addressing joint mobility, muscle tension, and underlying structural imbalances.

Treating TMJ

Chiropractic Care focuses on joint alignment and function through gentle adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and postural corrections. It is particularly beneficial if your TMJ pain is linked to neck tension or spinal misalignment.

Osteopathic Manual Therapy takes a holistic approach by addressing muscle tension, joint mobility, and overall body mechanics. It uses techniques like cranial osteopathy, soft tissue manipulation, and lymphatic drainage. It is particularly effective for patients with chronic tension or stress-related clenching.

Massage Therapy is a non-invasive approach that addresses muscle tension and inflammation through trigger point therapy, myofascial release, intraoral massage, and neck and shoulder massage. It is an excellent choice for individuals experiencing muscle tightness or stress-related jaw pain.

Massage therapy modalities that can be beneficial to TMJ patients are numerous, and include:

Neuromuscular Therapy

To target triggers points in the jaw muscles as well as addressing postural distortion and bio-mechanical dysfunction.

Intra-Oral Massage

Highly recommended to target the related muscular head on. If done correctly intra-oral massage is very comfortable for the client.

Cranial Sacral Therapy

To unblock nerve passages in the spine, skull and cranial sutures.

Swedish Massage

To reduce tension and anxiety.

Myofascial Release

Relaxes and stretches affected muscles and fascial tissues in the jaw, neck, and shoulders.

Post-Isometric Relaxation

Exercises to allow the jaw to relax in a not invasive way.
